Devil Fish

author

Alexander Calder

description

Mediums: рainted sheet metal, bolts.
Location: The Calder Foundation (New York, the USA).

In addition to working with moving objects, Calder also created more stable figures, consisting of several intersecting planes of thin metal sheets and connected with rivets. Painted in local black, these surfaces create a plastic unity with the help of curved lines and smooth outlines. Despite the fact that the sculpture is static, it resembles a moving living creature, like a stingray floating under water. The “Fish Devil” and other similar works were called “stabiles” and eventually became larger and larger until they turned into full-fledged city sculptures.
