Dazzle-ships in Drydock at Liverpool

author

Edward Wadsworth

description

Mediums: tempera, canvas, mascara.
Location: The Ottawa National Gallery (Canada).

The canvas composition is built on two main forms – gracefully rounded horizontal sides of the ship, standing on the dock and ready to sail, and many verticals that indicate the industrial zone. The grandeur of the vessel is shown by tiny figures of working people. A surprisingly harmonious in colour scheme picture (grey-blue and deep shades of red) impressed Peter Saville, a British graphic designer, after 70 years. He took the title Dazzle Ships for the album (known as “Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark”), designed the cover of the publication, using the picture of Wadsworth.
