Daedalus

description

Mediums: oil, canvas.
Location: The National Art Gallery, Athens (Greece).

Nikos depicted the outstanding engineer and artist, a famous character from ancient Greek mythology, who was credited with the invention of various tools, when he got inspired. Dressed in purple Greek clothes, armed with a pair of compasses, like a spear, he hurries to embody the idea. Perhaps, he is going to build a maze on the island of Crete. The dynamics of the movement are reinforced by the disproportionately large bare feet of the character. He occupies the entire space of the picture, reaching heaven with very conditionally depicted clouds. This is one of the few paintings where the sea is not painted but implied outside the walls of the modern (obviously not ancient Greek, although there is a national flag) fortress.
