Cycloptomania

author

Gordon Onslow Ford

description

Mediums: oil, canvas.
Location: private collection.

About the painting:

After the artist moved to the United States, his painting underwent significant changes. Ford’s canvases became light and multi-figured, compared with his earlier works, in which the compositional center was often one or two large objects. In the painting “Cycloptomania” almost the entire surface of the canvas is filled with strange moving living figures; some of them hover in space, while others grow in the ground like plants. The whole work resembles an extraordinary round dance in the depths of the sea, in which, despite the seeming randomness, there is a strict order prescribed by the laws of the Universe.
