Cubism (Tram No. 6)

author

Mikhail Menkov

description

Mediums: oil, canvas.
Location: The Samara State Art Museum (Russia).

This Cubofuturistic composition resembles abstraction: the appearance of the vehicle is only guessed by the presence of wires, stylized parts of the mechanism, the warning inscription “Do not protrude” and the letter “T” repeated several times. Despite the fact that most of the geometric shapes that fill the entire space of the picture are vertical, the translational movement of the tram is conveyed by several strokes and colour schemes – the place where the car moves along the rails is highlighted diagonally. The city is indicated by a fragment of the house in the background.
