Corinth

author

Barbara Hepworth

description

Mediums: guarea wood and paint.
Location: The Tate Gallery (London, the UK).

After the tragic death of her son, the artist temporarily left art and, at the insistence of her friends, spent several months in sunny Greece. Upon returning home, she returned to art and created a series of works named after the cities she saw, in particular Corinth, which Hepworth loved the most. This work very clearly demonstrates the artist’s interest in the influence of light on sculpture. Thanks to intricate smooth bends of the form and numerous holes in the tree, light penetrates the very center of the composition, creating interesting effects. The impression is enhanced by the contrast of dark and smooth wood on the surface and a matte light “core”.
