Chimney and snowman

author

Jindrich Styrsky

description

Mediums: oil, canvas.
Location: private collection.

The work was created literally in the first weeks of the artist’s stay in Paris. The canvas was exhibited under its original name at the first joint exhibition of the art of Styrsky and Toyen in the winter of 1926 in Paris. This painting is an example of the fact that the author, although not wholly distanced himself from Cubism and was influenced by the lyricism characteristic of Czech painting, already worked with a particular objective reality. At the same time, realistic details (a comic character and a pan on his head, a pipe, a ladder, branches) are depicted with gentle humour. Images became a “magical journey around the world”, and not around the room, as it was in Cubism. Nearby inexplicably were images that had nothing in common with each other.
