Catharsis

author

Magdalena Abakanowicz

description

Mediums: bronze.
Location: The collection of Giuliano Gory, “Spazi d’Arte”, Florence (Italy).

In this composition of 33 human corpses, the author, who was still interested in figurativeness, used simpler forms that are close to abstract. The open-air work for the Gory Foundation is impressive not only in height (each figure is three meters) but also in design. As the sculptor said, “these are not people at a certain time, but the individual in general.” Thus, her art is a universal “story about the state.” Magdalena added, “I am constantly working on a story perceived as exsistentia”, meaning that she told about a state of fear or disappointment, longing or pain.
