Blue Venus

author

Yves Klein

description

Mediums: pigment on plaster.
Location: private collection.

The author applies his patented International Klein Blue paint to the gypsum sculpture – the famous Greek Venus of Milos, transferring a monochrome image into a three-dimensional field. Thus, he establishes a peculiar connection between the infinite cosmos, the human form and the culture of civilization. By painting the well-known masterpiece, Klein gives it a new commercial appeal, at the same time, creating a kind of kitsch. The very idea makes the French artist the direct predecessor of Pop art, and Klein was an enthusiastic member of French modernist design. This work, according to art critics, anticipated the use of live nude female models to create the Anthropometries series. “Nick of Samothrace” is also known as made in the same way.
