description

The Museum of Modern Art, New York (the USA).

Oil, pencil, objects found.

The first installation of Robert Rauschenberg from the Comines series created from various household items combined with traditional materials. The work is on the verge of collage, painting and sculpture and has the form of an ordinary bed. To create it, the artist used a real pillow, a sheet and a blanket, which he cut, painted with pencils and filled with paints; then he placed several household items on top. Legend has it that Rauschenberg created this work spontaneously, without a preliminary idea, using his bed and things which were in the room at the time of the installation.
