After breaking up with the group of Surrealists and moving to Europe, Matta’s paintings became more narrative and substantive. Unlike his surrealistic semi-abstract paintings, where the main heroes were shapeless figures and colour spots, the painting “Apple” has several stable, albeit fantastic figures. They froze in front of a yellow fruit lying on a flat surface, which is of great value to these creatures and acts as a kind of “apple of discord”. Despite the fact that no action takes place in the picture, its atmosphere is quite tense and dramatic.
