All in One

author

Marie Toyen (Maria Cerminova)

description

Mediums: oil, canvas.
Location: The National Museum of Contemporary Art, Center Pompidou, Paris (France).

As suggested by one of the art historians, the name of this painting may refer to the play of the same name by Andre Breton, which the author of the canvas knew well. The viewer can see separate elements, like in a dream. Some of them, like white gloves, are quite realistic; others are obscure, similar to hallucinations, which appear in the imagination of a woman with closed eyes. She is wrapped in something that looks like animal skin. By the composition, this work is associated with the painting “Injury of Birth” by Styrsky, where a number of things and objects are “listed”. This is a whole night universe, fabulous and fantastic, creating the effect of spells, characteristic of the works of Toyen.
