Abstract painting (809-4)

author

Gerhard Richter

description

Mediums: oil, canvas.
Location: private collection.

The work from the cycle of abstract paintings created by the artist in the 1990s is one of Richter’s most expensive works. It was sold at Sotheby’s auction in 2012 for $ 34.2 million, which at that time was a record for living artists. The picture is a complete abstraction painted using bright, mainly red, yellow and dark blue colours. Richter used the usual construction spatula, applying dry layers of paint and creating a bizarre structure with some effect of depth and movement.
