A Present for the Past

author

Gordon Onslow Ford

description

Mediums: oil, canvas.
Location: Tate Gallery (London, England).

About the painting:

The artist tried to express what happens to a person during sleep, his time travel and instantaneous long distance movements occurring in the subconscious. Working on the picture, Onslow Ford used automatic writing, putting paints on the canvas spontaneously, not thinking about their content. At the same time, he worked simultaneously on two canvases, which ultimately turned out to be fully different. The second variant, much darker and saturated with various elements, unfortunately, has not been preserved. Later, the artist himself analyzed the result of his work, noting that the thoughts and feelings that he experienced during creation did not quite correspond to what appeared on the canvas, although they are very close to this.
