A Beggar on Crutches

author

Ernst Barlach

description

Mediums: bronze.
Location: The monastery courtyard of Ratzeburg Cathedral, Guestrow (Germany).

The theme of the master’s later works seemed to deliberately not correspond to the warlike mood prevailing in German society. Beggars and cripples were not needed by Nazism. In Barlach sculptures, their faces are often depicted with erased gender roles. If not for the beard, the character could have been mistaken for a woman. And this position is not accidental – the sculptor thinks globally, his pain is universal. In addition to the bronze casting, a gypsum statue has been preserved; it is located in the Chapel of St. Gertrude in the city of Gustrow.
