The Forest

author

Vladimir Tatlin

description

Mediums: oil, canvas.
Location: State Tretyakov Gallery, Moscow.

The image consisting of curvilinear lines and vertically inclined planes is pressed close to the foreground of the composition, making only the down part of the forest, where the trunks are very thick, seen. The space gets depth thanks to the black background, which does not look deaf – the same mighty forest is supposed to be there. The figure of a wanderer with a stick is disproportionately small, but his posture does not show confusion and fear. The artist used the harmonious combination of ocher and olive-gray colors to depict the winter nature and made a slight color emphasis on the traveler, adding cinnabar to the color of his clothes.
