Marie Toyen (Maria Cerminova)

description

Mediums: oil, canvas.
Location: The National Museum of Contemporary Art, Center Pompidou, Paris (France).

The artist created this painting when she was young, in the first Parisian period of her creative career. It was made in a canonical by that time Cubist manner, to which Toyen would subsequently hardly return, although she used some of the techniques of this style. The theme of urban landscape is traditional for Cubists: it is composed of irregular geometric figures and conveys the complex architecture of the port with narrow streets, multi-level buildings and outlines of ships and boats. Blue fragments of the composition indicate the presence of the water area.
