description

Mediums: oil, canvas.
Location: The Museum of Modern Art, New York (the USA).

From the cycle of moving characters considered the peak of the early creative heyday of easel painting by Varvara Stepanova, this sitting figure is the most complex. The artist, who did not paint abstract pictures, approached abstraction in this painting. Concerning the further development of fine art, this painting can be characterized as Abstract Surrealism. This interpretation is exceptionally consistent with the character’s head and one of his hands, which holds a round object of unknown purpose instead of a brush.
