Crucifixion

author

Gerardo Dottori

description

Mediums: oil, canvas.
Location: The Vatican Museum.

The artist’s proximity to biblical themes is associated with his church paintings, which he worked on when he was young. In 1932, together with F. Marinetti and other associates, he created and signed the “Manifesto of Futuristic Religious Art”, in which the artists outlined their ideas about the modern religious painting. Dottori managed to combine the futuristic dynamics and energy and its thirst for life with the eternal ideals of Bible making “The Crucifixion” one of the best of its genre. The painting, which initially did not receive the approval of the clergy and was even considered indecent, won the first prize at the 1950 Biennale of Religious Art and was placed in the Vatican Museum. To present this work at the competition, the artist created its copy of the same size.
