Chapels of Europe and Japan in the Thibaud Poirier photo project

Friday, Apr 10 — 11:51 pm

Sacred Spaces is a photo project of the Parisian photographer Thibaud Poirier, in which he captured the interiors of modernist churches throughout Europe and Japan.

Poirier presents the modern church as a “delicate institution” that resists change while remaining attached to tradition.

According to the photographer himself, he was inspired by the fantastic variety of church design. A cross, rows of seats and a space that is designed to evoke surprise, reflection and devotion are what unite churches around the world.

Saint Mary's Cathedral, Tokyo, Japan - Kenzo Tange, 1964

The construction of the Saint Mary’s Cathedral in Tokyo was completed in 1964, replacing the old wooden cathedral in the Gothic style, which was burned during the war. Tange conceived the new church as a concrete structure complex in shape, but simple in concept, which resembles the lightness of a bird and its wingspan.

Grundtvigs Kirke, Copenhagen, Denmark - Peder Vilhelm Jensen-Klint, 1927

Jensen-Clint’s design for the Grundtvig Church is a synthesis of architectural styles. Clint combined the modern geometric forms of brick expressionism with the classic vertical forms of Gothic architecture.

Saint Moritz, Augsburg, Germany - John Pawson, 2013

The design of the church was created by London architect John Pawson, who wanted to create here “the church space of the future.” The goal was to express the “clarity” and “minimalism” of space.

Kirche am Hohenzollernplatz, Berlin, Germany - Johann Freidrich Höger, 1933

The inner part of the nave is built of 13 reinforced concrete beams that end in the form of pilasters on the ground. The streamlined shape of the beams gives the interior a certain Gothic and at the same time very modern appeal.
