Functionalism (architecture)

description

This movement appeared at the beginning of the twentieth century. Initially considered part of modernism.

Key ideas:

– Architects used clear figures in their works – circles and squares.

– Creation of the so-called “houses on pylons” – buildings where the walls were completely or partially absent.

– The use of “band glazing” facades – a continuous row of windows.

– Predominant colours – white, yellow and gray.

Representatives of functionalism: Walter Gropius, Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, Bruno Taut, Louis Henry Sullivan.
