In the performance that made her famous, Marina Abramovic assigned herself a passive role. The naked artist was simply in the room where dozens of various items, such as perfume, rose, scissors, honey, salt and a loaded gun, were laid out on the table. The author of the performance was inactive, and the audience was invited to influence the artist in any way, giving her joy and pleasure, or, conversely, pain and humiliation. Such a performance had never been held before, and it was a shocking discovery for many, mostly for Abramovic herself. For six hours, the audience interacted in various ways with the artist; at the end, things got so emotional that one of the participants tried to put a loaded pistol at Marina’s head. This experiment showed how merciless and aggressive can be a group of people when participants know that they will go unpunished for their actions.
