The basis for the plot of the work was Claude Lorren’s painting “A Sermon on the Mountain” created in 1656. This artist worked in the Baroque style, which David Hockney has always admired. Having digitized the darkened picture of the old master, on which the figures were barely distinguishable, the artist received a clear image of all the characters and the surrounding nature. David Hockney left the composition in its original form, changing only the colours, making them bright and expressive, characteristic of his style. Thanks to clearer silhouettes and extremely saturated colours, the work acquired a completely different sound – the modern master created a much more intense atmosphere than was in the original work.
