In the late 1940s, Giacometti worked on a series of miniature figures. He wrote that, to his horror, he suddenly began to make tiny figurines – no higher than seven centimeters. They often form groups but remain very isolated. The four men “inhabiting” the square walk widely towards the center, but it is obvious that no one is heading towards each other. The static figure of a woman at the edge of space looks completely isolated. The scene is snatched from the realities of the modern city, the problem of loneliness is revealed in it in a new way – by comparing the vast and empty area with small and faceless figures.
