The Palace at 4 a.m.

author

Alberto Giacometti

description

Mediums: wood, glass, wire, string.
Location: The Museum of Modern Art, New York (the USA).

In his surreal period, Giacometti erected sculptures, scenes, which, as he said, he saw in dreams as “completed”. He wanted to reproduce them in statues and instances, “without changing anything”. Specialists call this work the most theatrical in the master’s legacy and not too interpretable. It is known that the “Palace” was inspired by his passionate love for Denise. That year, the artist dedicated his prose poem Charbon d’herbe to her; it is full of such mysterious images as a ceiling in the air that laughs. Perhaps, fragile palaces made of glass and wood are the dreams and desires of the author.
