The decorative group is characterized by harmoniously flowing, “melodious” rhythms that give rise to an idea of both the physical and spiritual beauty of working people. The monumentalist prepared the work for the Moskvoretsky Bridge: together with the “Sea” and the “Earth”, this sculpture was planned as an allegory of fertility. The idea was not realized, and “Bread” remained as a solitary composition and was first shown at the “Food Industry” exhibition in 1939. The sculptor embodied her bold solution, leaving a free space in the center that would fit perfectly into the open space of the bridge. The work does not show a strong-willed heroic effort of labour, but rather glorifies the natural grace of movements.
