The sculpture, originally made of marble, was the beginning of a new stage in the work of Brancusi, which gradually led him to ideal egg-shaped forms. This was one of five works selected and brought to New York by the organizers of the Armory Exhibition in 1913. In the lying symmetrical oval heads, the author showed his interest in the play of the line and their relationship with round and spiral masses. A curved and high-quality smooth contour creates an impression of elegance, and fine bronze facing gives the sculpture modern and self-sufficient archetypal forms. Each of the sculptures of this large series has its character and mood. In “Sleeping Muse”, this is complete calmness and, as a result, relaxation of facial features.
