Magdalena Abakanowicz

description

Mediums: burlap, laminate, resin.
Location: The Museum of Modern Art of Prague (Museum Kampa) (Czech Republic).

In the 1970s, M. Abakanowicz moved from medium-sized works to a series of large figurative and often figurative sculptures made from pieces of coarse fabric. The artist sewed and knitted the details of human figures and other objects with synthetic resins. These works became more representative than those that needed to be hung. The artist said, “something soft and with a complex structure” became her material; she argued, “I do not want to create otherwise than by touching, feeling the materials. There is no intermediary between them and me, no tool. I shape with my hands and transmit my energy.” Abakanowicz always remained true to the idea of seriality, and some of these works were subsequently made of metal.
