The Labyrinth

Briefly about the painting:

In this work, we can see not just labyrinth, but its inhabitant, the semi-ordinary Minotaur, the son of the Queen of Crete Pasiphae. The mythological character is huge and rises high from the ravine landscape merging with it. The complex figure as if represented in a cut, occupies the whole central part of the canvas and is filled with different decorative elements. Using an ancient myth, Masson expresses the depression of the pre-war climate in Europe, where fascism was already gaining strength – the art of the painter was declared degenerative and had to be destroyed.
