Worker and Collective Farm Woman

author

Vera Mukhina

description

Mediums: stainless chrome-nickel steel.
Location: The roof of the museum and exhibition center of the same name in Moscow (Russia).

The famous monumental statue towered 25 meters above the USSR pavilion at the World Exhibition of Arts and Technology in Paris and ten years later became the emblem of “Mosfilm”. It was called a model of the sculpture of the twentieth century; souvenirs of its copy were released in France. A young man and a girl are the personification of the masters of the country (the working class and the collective farm peasantry) high up the emblem – crossed sickle and hammer. The pathos of creation and pride for your people – such was the plan of architect B. Iofan, who took the idea from the ancient statues “Tyranobors” and “Nika of Samothrace”. Mukhina brilliantly embodied this idea. This is the only sculptural monument that has its museum – it is located inside the pedestal and tells the story of the creation in photographs, mock-ups, projects, events. A small copy of the work is at the Tretyakov Gallery.
