1936
Location: The Wadsworth Atheneum Museum (Hartford, Connecticut, the USA).
In the composition, Cornell used a surreal practice of juxtaposing several different things that were not directly related to each other; later, they became his style. A glass cup, an egg, a doll’s head, a device for blowing soap bubbles and an ancient map of the moon create an unusual ensemble, surprising you with a strange harmony. The installation was one of many devoted to the theme of space and soap bubbles, which in the artist’s imagination were inextricably linked. Thanks to the dark frame and repeating square elements at the top of the box, the overall plan of the work resembles a film frame, which indicates the author’s passion for cinema.
