Torso of Ile-de-France

author

Aristide Maillol

description

Mediums: bronze.
Location: The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York (the USA).

The plastic of the naked female torso attracted the master for decades. He created many such torso sculptures, changing the slope, turn, size and fragmentation of the figure (Summer torso – full height, Spring Torso – above the knees, etc.). In this work, the figure is taken much lower than the knees, which allowed the author to show the dynamics of movement, flowing into a barely noticeable and exquisite turn of the whole body. The sculptor said, “Creating a figure of one woman, I want to convey the impression of all women. My feeling passes into my fingers”. The work is considered the most lyrical and feminine of all Maillol’s goddesses and his highest achievement.
