This painting was inspired by the natural scenery around Åsgårdstrand, where Munch went in the summer. According to the artist, he depicted Milly Thaulow, a married woman, with whom he fell in love in 1885. The painting has a very strict composition. The figure of the woman contrasts with the horizontal shoreline and the pine trees.
