Munch depicted his sister Johanne Sophie, who died from tuberculosis at the age of 14. Sophie is shown on her deathbed accompanied by her aunt Karen. The girl is covered by a heavy dark blanket. She looks towards a dark and portentous full-length curtain to her left, which many art historians interpret as a symbol of death. The artist created a series of such paintings.
