About the painting:

The painting exhibited at the Carnegie International in Pittsburgh was recognized as the most popular in this show. Many viewers admired the dramatic image of the resistant cliff after the Second World War. The painting reflects surrealistic visions that became brighter thanks to the painstaking manner of the author. The plot difficult to interpret offers a parable about the destruction and reconstruction. The jagged rock looms in the center of the composition and is held vertically, despite the fact that its base is destroyed. The smoke on the right hints at the bombing of London, and on the left is the construction of a new building. The picture was ordered by spouses Kaufmann. Their son donated this work to the Art Institute in 1956.
