Briefly about the painting:
When Surrealism appeared in Paris, Masson immediately became one of original artists in this group of avant-garde artists. In this painting, the plot is a mountain outside of Aix-Provence – the same one that Paul Cezanne depicted many times approximately about half a century ago. Andre Masson did not depict a certain location precisely, but rather depicted an explosion of energy. The artist was a leading practitioner of the surrealistic technique of “automatic” painting, in which conscious control over the hand movement was suppressed in order to free the subconscious. That is why the viewer can only guess the outlines of the famous Mount Victoire and the pines.
