The painting was created soon after Leonora Carrington ran away from her strict parents to the bright world of art and love of Paris. Lord Candlestick – this is a humorous nickname of her father, which she gave him when she was a child. The horrified horses symbolize the girl’s fear during the escape and, probably, the fear of the consequences of such a bold and largely reckless act. At the same time, comic poses and mimics of the horses tell about the artist’s sense of humor and her critical attitude towards the world and herself.
