This picture is also known as Portrait of Amélie Noellie Matisse-Parayre, the wife of Henri Matisse. It is named “The green line” for the green band that divides the face in half, by which Matisse sought to produce a sense of light, shadow, and volume without using traditional shading. This is one of the paintings which was labeled a creation of Les Fauves (the wild beasts) at the exhibition in Paris in 1906.
