The Great Journey

author

Sir Roland Algernon Penrose

description

Mediums: oil, canvas.
Location: Tate Gallery (London, Great Britain).

Despite the fact that only oil was used in this painting, it looks like a collage. Things, scattered around the canvas and not connected between each other anyhow, cause different associations, as it happens in a dream. The center of the composition is a vessel for water distillation, which impressed the artist by its unusual look. To make the work more mysterious, Penrose placed dancing couples and inverted vertically sunset on the sea. As usually, he named the painting only after finishing it, expressing the atmosphere of the joyful excitement and fuss in the painting.
