Vincent van Gogh was one of Emile Bernard’s friends. They met at Fernand Cormon’s studio, where they both studied. The painters influenced the styles of one another. Having come from Paris for the funeral of his friend, Bernard wrote: “on the walls of the room where the body lays, all his canvases were nailed, forming a sort of halo around him, and rendering his death all the more painful to the artists who were present by the splendor of the genius which radiates from them”.
