The classic story of the arrival of Christopher Columbus in America. In this painting, Columbus is surrounded by numerous figures. With his right hand, the hero sets a banner with the image of the Virgin Mary on the newly discovered land (the portrait resembles Dali’s wife). With his left hand, Christopher takes his ship to the shallows. The artist portrayed himself as a monk in the lower right corner of the picture. The shell of a giant sea urchin, according to the author, symbolizes the orbit of artificial satellites launched in 1957 by the USSR, and in 1958 by the USA.
