1942
Mediums: oil, canvas.
Location: the MALBA Gallery, Buenos Aires (Argentina).
Along with paintings by Salvador Dali, this work is considered a masterpiece of Surrealism. The plot was inspired by the events of World War II, and it immerses the viewer in an atmosphere of despair and fear. The dark, almost black background, which creates an oppressive impression, is diluted with flashes of bright red accents and whitish foggy formations. On the left side of the canvas, you can see the likeness of a human figure engulfed in fire, as well as fragments of some buildings or mechanisms, while the right side of the canvas is almost empty and is a frightening mortal funnel as if drawing everything around it into itself.
