In his works, Noguchi managed to successfully combine the western, modernist tradition with the techniques of eastern culture. Its forms are based on the aesthetic categories of Japanese art, in which the concept of “emptiness” is of great importance when the free spaces are no less significant than the sculptural details themselves. “The Cry” is a brilliant example of this principle. Outwardly similar to a Japanese hieroglyph, it is a part of a strictly defined space and significantly affects its perception. The author himself called his works “nodes of emptiness”, pointing at the critical importance of placing the subject in the environment.
