description

Mediums: oil, canvas.
Location: the State Tretyakov Gallery, Moscow (Russia).

The artist depicted the everyday objects of his room in the Parisian Hive (La Ruche), kitchen utensils and a cast-iron stove (as a symbol of the era), in a Cubist manner. Using thick paints and very saturated colours, the author of the still life did not care much for colouristic harmony – perhaps it is not in the poor people’s living room. All the objects are random – there are a blue kettle and a red bucket, obviously serving as a pot, a mortar, and the edge of a round wooden table on a dirty green background of the walls. The objects expressed by geometric planes are tangible and expressive due to the bright light incident from above.
