Throughout the 1930s, Miro created relatively few paintings, focusing mainly on collages and interior design. The paintings of this period are distinguished by a dark colour palette and gloomy plots, which were echoes of civil strife in Spain and marked the approach of the war. The emotional intensity of the works also increased, bringing Miro closer to Expressionists. In the still life, an old boot, an apple pierced by a fork and other objects symbolize the tragedy of a person’s life and the senseless cruelty of any war.
