Steppe Song

description

Mediums: watercolour, paper.
Location: The State Russian Museum, St. Petersburg (Russia).

This work already clearly shows the individual approach of the 20-year-old artist to the principles of analytical art he acquired. The faces of people listening to a long and, no doubt, sad song are depicted exceptionally realistically. All symbolic (and in this picture romantic) meaning is conveyed by its unusual composition. The plot construction is vertically oriented in Filonov’s style, but the background is original. It consists of blurry spots that flow into each other and form an unsteady haze.
