This painting is considered a classic example of Italian Futurism. The motive of the strength, grandeur and impeccability of machines characteristic of most followers of this art movement is reflected in the work of Umberto Boccioni. The image focuses on a vast locomotive that occupies the entire center of the picture, leaving people crowding in clouds of gray translucent smoke. This work most vividly demonstrates the basic idea of Futurism – the dominance of machines over a man and the insignificance of people in comparison with the power and perfection of mechanisms.
