The artist created this work during his stay in Paris; it conveys the gloomy atmosphere of pre-war Europe. In the painting with smoky grey colours, we can see lonely cliffs that seem to grow out of a milky fog. Inside each mountain is a woman resembling the author. The heroines of the painting are fettered by heavy shackles, which speak of the alienation in this world, and possibly fear of the surrounding reality. The pale ribbon encircling the mountains connects these lonely souls like a ray of hope and expresses their mutual desire for freedom, inner strength and faith in themselves.
