description

Mediums: oil, canvas.
Location: The Chicago Institute of the Arts (the USA).

Insidious sirens luring travelers with their wonderful voices are depicted here as ordinary girls. Fully dressed and decorously sitting in silent expectation, they seem to pose no threat, but the ominous silence that fills the canvas suggests otherwise. The atmosphere of a dream, a strange nightmare is created by their empty looks, identical poses and full clothes, and a lonely male figure only enhances this effect. If you look closely, you can also see in the distance the same girls on the shore, but already turned into mermaids and starting their hunt.
