1963
Mediums: bronze.
Location: The building of the UN General Assembly (New York, the USA).
The largest sculpture by Barbara Hepworth and her most significant work. The “single form”, which is an irregular flat oval with a round hole cut in the upper part, is installed in the fountain in front of the UN high-rise building in New York. It was commissioned by this organization and is dedicated to the UN Secretary-General Dag Hammarskjöld, who tragically died in a plane crash in 1961. Hammarskjöld was a big fan of Barbara Hepworth and a collector of her work. The sculpture, which he most admired, was the wooden “Single form”, made in 1939, so this composition formed the basis of the massive monument.
